Frequently Asked Questions
A Chinese medicine consultation is an evaluation/diagnosis and treatment session according to the doctrines and theories of Chinese medicine, given by a specialist in the field.
Treatments depend on the patient and the situation they are in at the time of each consultation. The pillars of prevention and treatment are acupuncture and moxibustion, tuina (massage), Chinese dietetics, Chinese pharmacopoeia (Chinese materia medica and prescription of Chinese formulas), and qi gong and taichi (physical exercise).
The main specialties in Chinese medicine are prevention and rehabilitation, external pathology, internal medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics and traumatology, and gynecology.
Consultations can last from 45 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Acupuncture involves inserting sterilized filiform needles at specific points, and the sensation each individual experiences is different. Generally, you feel a slight prick as the needle passes through the epidermis. When the needle reaches the acupuncture point, you may feel a sensation of numbness, warmth, heaviness, or a radiating sensation. These reactions are normal and expected by the acupuncturist. After a few seconds, you stop feeling the needle, and your body relaxes.
Chinese medicine addresses painful conditions, psychological conditions, gastrointestinal conditions, dermatological conditions, and general system strengthening as a prevention for chronic situations. It helps with weight loss and addiction situations (e.g., smoking).
Results depend on the patient’s condition. Acute conditions are quicker to treat (on average 2 to 3 sessions), while chronic conditions require more sessions, potentially over 10.
TCM is deductible on IRS up to the limit established for health expenses. Depending on the insurance you subscribe to, TCM consultations can be included if justified through a medical prescription.
